Meet Your Instructor
Christy Haywood brings over a decade of real-world phlebotomy experience to Apex Phlebotomy Institute — the kind that only comes from years on the floor, not just in a classroom. Since 2015, she has served as a Patient Services Representative and Phlebotomist at Mako Medical Laboratories in Raleigh, NC, handling specimen collection, drug screens, and pathology and cytology samples with precision and consistency. Before that, she spent time at UNC REX Hospital as a Customer Service Tech/Phlebotomist, mastering venipuncture technique, patient identification protocols, and the customer service skills that make a technician trustworthy at the bedside. Christy earned her Phlebotomy Certificate from Wake Technical Community College in 2014, and her career reflects a rare combination: technical accuracy, operational efficiency, and genuine warmth with patients. Her earlier background as an Executive Office Manager at IBM also gives her a sharp eye for organization, communication, and training — skills she now brings directly into the classroom. Students in Christy's courses get more than technique. They get a mentor who has drawn blood in high-volume clinical settings for years and knows exactly what it takes to walk into a lab or hospital on day one and perform with confidence.
Every module is built the same way
Apex Phlebotomy Institute uses the same instructional model already proven in all of the ApexOS Leadership Series. Each module has four parts: a short video lesson built from the facilitator deck; an audio-only companion for the drive in; a live facilitated session — discussion, tabletop, or role-play, where real judgment gets built; and a practice set — an infographic, a flashcard deck, and a knowledge-check quiz. Students move through the async pieces on their own time and come together only for the part that has to be live.
